This diversity is not only a wonderful resource for our schools – it’s a wonderful opportunity for you. We’re talking about the chance to teach children from an almost global catchment area. Make no mistake, you’ll learn almost as much from them as they will from you. Join any one of the borough’s forty eight primary schools and you’ll find that they’ve taken an early lead on literacy and numeracy strategies.
There’s an unerring commitment to making sure children move onto secondary school with good basic skills. The schools are also supported by many other initiatives, including after school reading clubs, holiday literacy schemes and family literacy projects. In each of the borough’s nine secondary schools – six community and three voluntary – you’ll find a passion for building an inclusive service – one that increases children’s access to the curriculum, culture and community of their school.
As a borough, we’re taking a lead role in the Excellence in the Cities Project. There’s also a flourishing Gifted and Talented Programme, not to mention a wide range of provision for children with special needs. You’ll find award winners here too. Five of our schools have Beacon status (identified as among the best performing in the country) and two have specialist status for languages and technology.
